Dolomite protection
Dolomite is often chosen as the practical alternative to marble. It is harder and slower to react, but it can still etch and stain. The film closes the gap.
What dolomite is
Dolomite is calcium magnesium carbonate. That magnesium makes it harder than marble and slower to react with acids, which is why it is often sold as the more durable choice. Popular slabs like Super White and some “soft quartzites” are actually dolomite.
Slower to react is not the same as not reacting. Lemon juice left sitting, a spilled glass of wine overnight, or an acidic cleaning spray can still dull the surface. And many dolomites are porous enough to take oil stains.
Popular dolomites
Dolomite has become one of the most popular benchtop stones in Sydney because it gives a marble-like look with more resistance. Super White, Fantasy Brown, Mont Blanc and many “soft quartzites” are dolomitic.
That extra resistance is real but limited. A spill wiped up quickly usually leaves nothing behind. A lemon half left face down, a glass of wine left overnight, or a spray-and-leave cleaning product can still leave a dull mark.
Leathered dolomite, with its textured, tactile surface, can also hold oil in the texture. Film keeps it clean and easy to wipe.

How it works
It is common. Many slabs marketed as quartzite are dolomite or marble. If your stone etches when lemon sits on it, it is not a true quartzite. Choose “Dolomite” or “Other” on the form and we will identify it.
It depends on use. For a busy family kitchen, it saves you watching every spill. For a low-use surface, sealing may be enough. See sealer vs film.
Match the stone: satin for honed or leathered dolomite, gloss for polished.
Super White is generally classed as dolomite. If yours etches under lemon juice, it is not a true quartzite.
