Granite protection
Granite,

Granite has a reputation as the indestructible benchtop, and it is very tough. But lighter and more porous granites can darken with oil, and all granite is sealed at some point. Film ends that cycle.

Living with granite
Tough, with
one weak spot.
Granite formed from cooling magma deep underground, which makes it dense and hard. It shrugs off knives, heat and most acids far better than marble, and it is the long-standing choice for busy family kitchens and outdoor benches.
Its weak spot is absorption. Lighter granites, and some with larger crystals, can take oil into the surface and darken in patches. That is why granite is usually sealed and then resealed every year or two.
Film replaces the resealing cycle and keeps stains on the surface. It is also a good choice for granite that has been freshly polished and that you want to keep looking that way.

Why film granite
The case is stains,
not etching.
Granite is an igneous stone made of quartz, feldspar and mica, so kitchen acids do not etch it the way they etch marble. The weak point is absorption. Pale granites in particular can develop dark patches around the cooktop where oil has soaked in.
Sealing slows that down but needs repeating. Film keeps liquids on the surface for as long as it is there, and it carries a 13-year warranty.

Is film overkill on granite?
For dark, dense granite in a low-use area, sealing may be enough. For pale or porous granite, or a busy kitchen, film saves the resealing and the stains.
