Modern islands are often a single large slab, sometimes three metres or more, with waterfall ends dropping to the floor and a deep overhang for stools. That means a lot of stone in the busiest part of the room.
The areas that mark first are predictable: the prep zone next to the sink, the spot by the stools where drinks and breakfast bowls land, and the edge where hands and elbows rest. Protecting the whole island keeps those zones matching the rest.
If your island has a sink or cooktop cut into it, the film is fitted neatly around the cut-outs.

The details
Waterfalls, mitres
and overhangs.
Islands often have waterfall ends, mitred edges and seating overhangs. The film follows all of them, so the top and sides are protected rather than just the flat surface.
On marble, dolomite, travertine and limestone islands, the film stops acid etching as well as stains. On granite and true quartzite, it is mainly about staining and ending the resealing cycle.
