The stone
Onyx forms in layers from mineral-rich water, which is where its bands and translucency come from. Most decorative onyx is calcite-based, so it etches very easily, and it scratches more readily than marble.
That is why onyx is usually kept to vanities, bar fronts, feature walls and tables rather than working kitchen benches. Even there, perfume, cocktails and cleaning products can mark it.
Showpiece stone
Onyx comes in honey, white, green, pink and blue varieties, with bands and clouds of colour that glow when light passes through them. That is why it is so often backlit on bar fronts, feature walls and vanities.
Decorative onyx is soft, often brittle, and usually reinforced with resin or a backing mesh. It is chosen for impact rather than durability, and even perfume or a splash of a cocktail can mark it.
