Why marble needs it

Marble is soft,
and it reacts to acid.

Marble is mostly calcium carbonate. That is what gives Calacatta and Carrara their glow, and it is also why a squeeze of lemon leaves a dull mark within minutes. The acid is not staining the stone, it is dissolving a thin layer of it. That mark is called an etch, and no amount of wiping removes it.

Marble is also porous. Oils, red wine and turmeric can soak into it before anyone notices the spill, and once they are in the stone they are very hard to get back out.

A sealer helps with the second problem but not the first. It slows liquids soaking in, but acid still reaches the surface and still etches it. We explain the difference in detail in sealer vs protection film.

How it works

A clear layer between
your marble and the kitchen.

Stone Shield film is a thin, near-invisible layer applied directly to the surface of the marble. Spills land on the film instead of the stone. Acids have nothing to react with, and stains have nowhere to soak into.

  • Anti-etch. Lemon, lime, vinegar, wine and soft drinks cannot reach the calcium carbonate underneath.
  • Stain resistant. Oil, coffee and red wine stay on top and wipe away.
  • Heat rated to 250°C. Hot cookware straight off the stove.
  • UV stable. A UV inhibitor helps keep the film from yellowing.
  • Satin or gloss. Matched to honed or polished marble.
  • Removable. It can be professionally removed if you ever need to.

Most marble kitchens are done in a few hours. Larger or more complex jobs can take a full day.

Does marble protection film stop etching?

Etching happens when an acid such as lemon juice, vinegar or wine reacts with the calcium carbonate in marble. The film sits between the acid and the stone, so the reaction cannot reach the marble. Wipe spills up as normal and the stone underneath stays unmarked.

Will the film change how my marble looks?

The film is near-invisible. You choose a satin finish, which keeps a honed or soft look, or gloss, which suits polished marble. We bring samples to the assessment so you can see both on your own stone before deciding.

Can you protect Calacatta and Carrara marble?

Yes. Calacatta, Carrara, Statuario and other white marbles are the stones we are asked to protect most, because they show etching and staining the most. The veining stays fully visible under the film.

Is it better to protect a new marble benchtop?

The best time is straight after installation, before the first etch. Existing marble can be protected too. If it already has etch marks, we will tell you at the assessment whether they should be restored first, because the film protects the surface as it is.

How long does marble protection film last?

Our film is backed by a 13-year warranty. How it wears in practice depends on how the surface is used. We will talk through the areas that work hardest in your kitchen during the assessment.

Can the film be removed later?

Yes. If circumstances change, the film can be professionally removed by our team.

Do I still need to seal marble after it is filmed?

No. The film replaces the resealing cycle. There is nothing to reapply and ordinary, suitable household cleaning is all it needs.
